Description
Halloween can bring high energy, schedule changes, and students who need productive opportunities to move. These Halloween Would You Rather questions turn that seasonal excitement into an SEL activity focused on decision-making, perspective-taking, and respectful discussion. The resource combines 24 Halloween-themed prompts with a write the room activity designed primarily for students in grades 3–6.
Students move around the classroom, read each prompt, choose between two options, and record their responses. Three differentiated response sheets allow you to adjust the writing demand while keeping students involved in the same activity.
Halloween Would You Rather Questions With an SEL Focus
The prompts connect Halloween themes with kindness, empathy, gratitude, problem-solving, social awareness, and respectful choices. Students practice making decisions, explaining what influenced their choices, and considering why a classmate might respond differently.
The goal is not for every student to choose the same answer. Students learn to communicate their reasoning, listen to other perspectives, and recognize that people can make different choices for understandable reasons.
Halloween Write the Room Activity
Post the task cards around the classroom and give each student the response sheet that best matches their writing ability and your instructional goal. Students move from card to card, read each question, and record their choices.
Three differentiated response sheets are included:
- Circle Only: Students select an answer without writing. This option works well when you want to reduce writing demands or complete the activity within a shorter period.
- Circle and Quick Write: Students choose an answer and restate the option in their own words.
- Circle, Quick Write, and Reflection: Students choose an answer, restate it, and briefly explain their reasoning.
Students can complete the activity independently, with partners, during centers, or as part of a counseling or social skills group. Use all 24 cards during one lesson or divide them into smaller sets across several days.
Reflection and SEL Discussion Are Built In
A complete list of all 24 Halloween Would You Rather questions is included with the SEL skill connected to each prompt. You will also receive 10 open-ended discussion questions that help students explore their decisions more carefully.
Use these questions to help students:
- Explain the reasoning behind their choices
- Consider the benefits and challenges of both options
- Think about how a decision could affect someone else
- Listen to classmates with different opinions
- Practice disagreeing respectfully
- Connect the prompts to kindness, gratitude, and empathy
- Decide whether hearing another perspective changed their thinking
These questions help turn the activity into more than a collection of seasonal choices. Students have a structured opportunity to reflect, communicate, and learn from the thinking of others.
