Valentine’s Day Appropriate vs Inappropriate Behavior Worksheets & Sorting Activities

Valentine’s Day brings natural opportunities to talk about friendship, kindness, inclusion, and how our choices affect other people. It can also bring social situations that are difficult for some students to navigate. These Valentine’s Day appropriate vs inappropriate behavior worksheets give students structured practice thinking through common behavior choices before they face similar situations themselves.

Students cut out 12 Valentine’s Day social situations in each activity and sort them according to the behavior shown. After sorting, they select one inappropriate behavior, explain why it may cause a problem, and consider a more appropriate response.

An alternate expected vs unexpected behavior version is also included, allowing you to choose the terminology that works best for your students, school, or program.

Practice Social Skills Through Valentine’s Day Situations

Students are often told to be kind or include others, but those reminders do not always teach them what to do in a specific situation. These sorting activities give students concrete examples they can examine, compare, and discuss.

The scenarios help students practice:

  • Identifying appropriate and inappropriate behavior
  • Recognizing expected and unexpected behavior
  • Thinking about how behavior affects other people
  • Applying expectations during Valentine’s Day activities
  • Explaining why a choice may create a problem
  • Identifying a more appropriate response

The reflection question moves the activity beyond simply sorting the examples. Students must explain their thinking, helping you determine whether they understand the social expectation instead of relying on a correct guess.

Two Terminology Options Are Included

Every activity is provided in two versions:

  • Appropriate vs Inappropriate Behavior
  • Expected vs Unexpected Behavior

Both versions contain the same 60 unique scenarios. You can select the terminology that fits your setting without purchasing or preparing a separate resource.

What’s Included

This resource includes:

  • 5 complete Valentine’s Day behavior sorting activities
  • 12 scenarios in each sort
  • 60 unique Valentine’s Day social and behavior scenarios
  • 6 appropriate or expected choices in each set
  • 6 inappropriate or unexpected choices in each set
  • Appropriate vs inappropriate behavior version
  • Expected vs unexpected behavior version
  • Cut-and-glue sorting pages
  • A reflection question for each activity
  • 10 activity pages in each terminology version
  • 20 activity pages total

The alternate versions use the same scenarios, so the resource contains 60 unique scenarios, not 120.

A Purposeful Valentine’s Day SEL Activity

A Valentine’s Day activity can be engaging while still addressing meaningful social-emotional skills. These Valentine’s Day behavior activities reinforce social awareness, problem-solving, and appropriate responses without reducing the lesson to a general reminder to “be nice.”

You can use the activities during:

  • Morning meeting
  • SEL instruction
  • Friendship or kindness lessons
  • Classroom-expectations review
  • Small-group social-skills instruction
  • Counseling or behavior intervention groups
  • Centers or partner work
  • Independent practice
  • Sub plans or meaningful early-finisher work

The cut-and-paste format provides hands-on practice, while the scenarios create natural opportunities for discussion. Students can compare choices, explain their reasoning, and consider what they could do differently in a similar situation.

Designed for Grades 2–5

The situations and activity format are designed for elementary students in Grades 2–5. The worksheets can be completed independently, with a partner, in a small group, or as part of a teacher-led classroom discussion.

Use all five sets during the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, or choose individual activities when students need more support with friendship, inclusion, social expectations, and considering how their choices affect others.

This resource is part of my Appropriate vs Inappropriate and Expected vs Unexpected Behavior Sorts product line. Each set provides hands-on practice with realistic behavior choices while using a seasonal or school-year theme.
