Description

The K-5th Grade Functional Life Skills Checklist Bundle helps elementary special education teams assess student skills, identify specific needs, select targeted interventions, and develop measurable IEP goals. It includes separate resources for K–2 and Grades 3–5 so educators can use checklist items, interventions, and goals that reflect the student’s developmental level.

Functional skill expectations change throughout elementary school. Younger students may be developing foundational routines, communication, safety awareness, self-care, and play skills. By upper elementary school, students are expected to manage materials, follow more complex routines, regulate emotions, advocate for help, and complete daily responsibilities with less adult support.

One checklist cannot accurately represent all of those expectations. I created this bundle to give educators a more structured way to assess and teach functional life skills across the elementary years.

K-5th Grade Functional Life Skills Checklist Bundle

The bundle includes two complete resources:

K–2nd Grade Functional Life Skills Checklist

The early elementary resource focuses on foundational abilities related to:

  • Daily routines
  • Communication
  • Personal safety
  • Self-care
  • Emotional regulation
  • Play and social participation
  • Following adult guidance
  • Emerging independence

3rd–5th Grade Functional Life Skills Checklist

The upper elementary resource reflects growing expectations related to:

  • Managing materials and responsibilities
  • Following multistep routines
  • Self-advocacy
  • Emotional and behavioral regulation
  • Work habits
  • Personal care
  • Peer interactions
  • School and community safety
  • Preparation for middle school

The two-resource structure allows teams to choose the grade band that best reflects the student’s current needs. Educators may also review both versions when a student’s abilities cross developmental levels.

Move From a Broad Concern to a Teachable Skill

A student described as “not independent” may need support with one specific part of a larger task. The student may not understand the routine, remember the steps, recognize when to ask for help, tolerate a difficult part of the task, or perform the skill across different people and settings.

These informal functional skills assessments separate broad concerns into specific, observable skills. The aligned intervention ideas and sample goals then help teams decide what to teach and how to support progress.

Educators can use the bundle to:

  • Identify functional skill strengths and needs
  • Establish informal baseline information
  • Select priorities for direct instruction
  • Choose targeted interventions
  • Develop individualized IEP goals
  • Document observations and progress
  • Support IEP, BIP, and MTSS planning
  • Improve collaboration among teachers, families, and service providers

What’s Included

This bundle includes:

  • One complete K–2nd grade resource
  • One complete 3rd–5th grade resource
  • Fourteen functional skill areas in each resource
  • Developmentally appropriate checklist items for each grade band
  • Targeted intervention ideas
  • Measurable sample goals
  • Notes and comments sections
  • Optional progress-monitoring sheets
  • Printable and digital tracking options

Both resources address the same 14 broad skill areas, but the individual skills, interventions, and goals are adapted for the developmental expectations of each grade band.

Fourteen Functional Life Skill Areas

Each resource addresses:

  • Community Navigation and Safety
  • Daily Living Skills
  • Employment and Job Readiness
  • Independence and Self-Advocacy
  • Meal Preparation and Nutrition
  • Medical and Health Management
  • Motor Skills and Safety Awareness
  • Personal Finance and Money Management
  • Play and Leisure Skills
  • Pre-Academic and Academic Readiness
  • Self-Care Skills
  • Self-Regulation and Emotional Control
  • Social Skills and Communication
  • Toileting Skills

Looking across these areas helps teams consider the whole student rather than assessing independence through one routine, behavior, or academic expectation.

Targeted Functional Skills Interventions

Each checklist area includes interventions aligned with the assessed skills. Depending on the need and grade band, strategies may include:

  • Explicit instruction and modeling
  • Visual schedules and directions
  • Task analysis
  • Guided practice
  • Prompting and prompt fading
  • Reinforcement
  • Environmental adjustments
  • Organizational supports
  • Social stories and role-play
  • Supported problem-solving
  • Practice across adults and settings
  • Self-monitoring and self-regulation strategies

The intervention lists provide practical starting points. Educators can select and adapt strategies based on the student’s needs, environment, and reason the skill may be difficult.

Measurable Functional Life Skills IEP Goals

The sample goals connect directly to the checklist skills. Teachers can adjust each goal’s setting, prompting level, frequency, performance criteria, and expected degree of independence.

Goals may address:

  • Daily living routines
  • Communication
  • Self-care
  • Safety awareness
  • Emotional regulation
  • Social participation
  • Self-advocacy
  • Organization and responsibility
  • Academic readiness and work habits
  • Independent functioning

Because the checklists, interventions, and goals are aligned, teams can more clearly explain what the student needs, why a goal was selected, and how that skill will be taught.

Important Assessment Information

These resources are informal educational assessment and planning tools. They are not standardized, norm-referenced, or diagnostic assessments. They do not replace a formal evaluation, functional behavior assessment, or other individualized assessment when one is required.

The checklist items, interventions, and sample goals should be individualized according to the student’s needs, baseline performance, environment, developmental level, and required support.

The purpose is not simply to document whether a student can or cannot perform a skill. It is to help the team identify what the student needs to learn next and plan instruction that supports meaningful independence over time.
