Description

These Back to School Appropriate vs Inappropriate Behavior Worksheets give students structured practice identifying behavior choices and thinking about how those choices affect other people. They are especially useful at the beginning of the school year, when teachers are establishing routines, reviewing expectations, and helping students understand what appropriate behavior looks like in different settings.

Students work through realistic school, home, and community situations rather than simply being told to “make good choices.” For each activity, they cut out 12 scenarios and sort them by the behavior shown. They then choose one inappropriate behavior, explain why it may cause a problem, and consider a more appropriate response.

An alternate expected vs unexpected behavior version is also included, allowing you to use the terminology that best fits your students, school, or program.

Practice Expected and Unexpected Behavior Through Realistic Situations

Students may be able to repeat a classroom rule without recognizing when or how it applies. These sorting activities give them specific examples they can discuss, compare, and connect to their own experiences.

The scenarios help students practice:

  • Identifying appropriate and inappropriate behavior
  • Recognizing expected and unexpected behavior
  • Thinking about how behavior affects other people
  • Explaining why a choice may create a problem
  • Considering a more appropriate response
  • Applying classroom expectations across different situations

The reflection component moves the activity beyond sorting. Students must explain their thinking, giving you an opportunity to check whether they understand the social expectation instead of relying on a correct guess.

Two Terminology Options Are Included

Every activity is provided in two versions:

  • Appropriate vs Inappropriate Behavior
  • Expected vs Unexpected Behavior

Both versions contain the same 60 unique scenarios. This allows you to select the language that works best for your setting without purchasing or preparing a separate resource.

A Hands-On Way to Review Classroom Expectations

These Back-to-School behavior activities can help you teach expectations without relying only on lectures, rule lists, or repeated reminders. The cut-and-paste format gives students an active way to work through the examples, while the scenarios provide natural opportunities for discussion and problem-solving.

You can use the activities during:

  • Morning meeting
  • SEL instruction
  • Beginning-of-the-year classroom routines
  • Small-group social-skills instruction
  • Counseling or behavior intervention groups
  • Centers or partner work
  • Independent practice
  • Sub plans or meaningful early-finisher work
  • Pre-teaching before school events or less-structured activities

Designed for Grades 2–5

The situations and activity format are designed for elementary students in Grades 2–5. The worksheets can be completed independently, with a partner, in a small group, or as part of a teacher-led classroom discussion.

Use all five sets during the first weeks of school, or spread them throughout the year when students need additional practice recognizing social expectations and making more appropriate choices.
